Vilma Marė. Biography.

Designer started career in the field of uniforms for science labs, spas, nurseries. Promoter of Northern spirit; eco-consciousness; intelligent materials cut and sewn within the network of cottage industry. Born Vilma Marija Naujikaite in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe, designer Vilma Maré received BA in Fashion Design in Kaunas Art College, later taught design and composition. Academy of Science contracted designer Vilma Maré to research, design and manufacturer uniforms for Laser group "Eksma" science/engineering, administrative office and mechanical departments).
Due to severe politics and economy in 1990, Designer left Lithuania to pursue her American dream. Ultimately, she continued her education at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology and landed one of her first jobs as an Illustrator for McCall Pattern Company. She later worked with leading companies including J. Crew, The GAP, American Eagle, Kenar, Bureau de Style and Mark Jacobs among others before launching her first label in 1998.
In 1999, the Art Director's Club 78th Annual Competition awarded Vilma Maré a Silver Medal as a Creative Director for the collaborative work "Tracing Her Body". Vilma Maré has presented her innovative designs in Kunstlerhaus Vienna, Sony Plaza; International Saint Etienne Design Biennale; Chelsea Greene Naftali Gallery, Columbia University, Lerner Hall; EXPO benefit fashion show, NYU; Gen Art's State of Fashion; several times in D.U.M.B.O. Arts Festival; Shooting Stars Spring 2000 Showcase; Zao store/gallery Cancer Society Benefit Party; and New York's alternative South of Seventh Fashion Week; World Peace Day at St. John's Church among others. Today, Vilma Maré is becoming recognized as one of New York's most innovative new designers.
Her work is exhibited in Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Artists Space Gallery in Soho, and has received attention from media as varied as Totem, WWD, Sportswear International, Simplicity, Smock, and urban style arbiter Surface magazine. Designer collaborated on creative/innovative projects with industrial design company Lunar; marketing agency Upshot, Chicago.
Vilma Maré works also as a costume designer at several New York based theater groups: WaxFactory, Ridge Theater and Stage Works. Her labels XZZXZZX (avant-garde sportswear) Vilma Maré. Baltic Style (womens sportwear), VM (mens sportswear)and ICA*INU (eveningwear) have sold at leading boutiques in New York: 1on G; Henri Bendel; Vo; The Apartment; Gallery 91; About Time, Antique Boutique, Patricia Fields, Hotel Venus; Yaso; Swell; and elsewhere in: Softcore, Chicago; Ariane, Beverly Hills; Swell, Sphere, Quies, LA; Hanna,Tokyo; Materia, AZ. First art installation "Madinga Nepriklausomybe" Vilma Mare presented in her native city Kaunas, Lithuania in Gallery Balta, 2014 and received a wide interest and press coverage. After that followed an installation at Dizainovacija event for Design Forum in cities Vilnius and Kaunas. In USA an installation "Queen of Serpents" was shown at The Foundry for Design Art + Culture and Wendy McDaris Fine Art Gallery, Hudson, NY.
